People travelling on future major roads in Bihar’s Madhubani district may soon have to pay toll charges.
The Bihar Government has notified the Bihar Road User Fee (Determination and Collection of Rates) Rules, 2026, allowing toll collection on selected new road projects.
The new rules will apply only to future notified projects and will not affect existing agreements or tenders.
Which Roads Can Have Toll?
Under the new rules, toll can be collected on:
New four-lane state highways
Bypasses
Major bridges
Controlled-entry roads and expressways
Several major road projects are already under construction or have been approved in Madhubani. If the government includes these projects under the new rules in the future, toll collection may begin on them.
Why Has the Government Introduced This Rule?
According to the government, building and maintaining modern roads requires a large amount of money.
The new toll system is aimed at creating a transparent way to recover part of the maintenance cost from people using these improved road facilities.
Toll Rates for Different Vehicles
The government has fixed base toll rates per kilometre for the financial year 2026-27. The final toll for each project will depend on the road length and other project details.
Car, Jeep, Van and Light Motor Vehicle: ₹1.25 per km
Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) and Minibus: ₹2.00 per km
Two-Axle Bus and Truck: ₹4.25 per km
Three-Axle Commercial Vehicle: ₹4.60 per km
Four to Six-Axle Heavy Vehicle: ₹6.65 per km
Seven or More Axle Vehicle: ₹8.10 per km
