Travelling on the Chennai Metro is about to become quieter. Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has introduced stricter rules to reduce noise inside trains and station premises.
Under the new rules, passengers who play music or videos without earphones, use their phones on loudspeaker, or create loud disturbances can now be fined up to ₹2,500.
The move is aimed at making metro travel more comfortable, safe, and peaceful for everyone.
What Are the New Rules?
CMRL has made it mandatory for passengers to use earphones or headphones while listening to music or watching videos during their journey.
Playing audio through a phone’s speaker, making loud speakerphone calls, or creating unnecessary noise that disturbs other passengers can now attract a fine of up to ₹2,500.
Metro officials have also been given the authority to remove passengers from metro premises if they repeatedly violate these rules.
Why Has the Fine Been Increased?
Earlier, the maximum penalty for such violations was ₹500.
Following recent changes to the Metro Railways regulations, the fine has now been increased to ₹2,500.
The higher penalty is intended to discourage behavior that inconveniences other commuters and encourage better travel etiquette across the metro network.
The rules apply to all types of unnecessary noise, including:
Playing music without earphones
Watching videos on loudspeaker
Speakerphone calls
Loud phone conversations that disturb fellow passengers
CMRL Wants a Better Travel Experience
According to Chennai Metro Rail Limited, the stricter rules are part of its efforts to reduce noise pollution and improve the travel experience for everyone.
With the number of daily passengers increasing, maintaining discipline and creating a peaceful environment inside trains and stations has become more important than ever.
CMRL has also been running awareness campaigns to encourage commuters to follow basic travel etiquette and respect fellow passengers.
Follow These Metro Etiquette Rules
Apart from using earphones, passengers are also advised to:
Avoid blocking train doors.
Stand behind the safety line on platforms.
Let passengers exit before boarding.
Follow escalator safety guidelines.
These simple practices help improve safety, reduce crowding, and make metro travel smoother for everyone.
By introducing stricter penalties, Chennai Metro aims to create a cleaner, quieter, and more commuter-friendly public transport system as ridership continues to grow.
