Travelling by Mumbai’s iconic black-and-yellow taxis or autorickshaws is set to become slightly more expensive from September 1, 2026.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority has approved a fare hike for both autos and taxis.
The minimum auto fare will increase by ₹1, while the minimum taxi fare will go up by ₹2.
The new rates will apply across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan, Vasai-Virar and Panvel.
Auto Fare To Increase From ₹26 To ₹27
Under the revised fare structure, the minimum autorickshaw fare for the first 1.5 km will rise from ₹26 to ₹27.
After the initial 1.5 km, passengers will be charged ₹18 per additional kilometre.
For people taking an occasional short auto ride, the increase may not make a big difference. However, commuters who use autos several times a day could see their monthly travel expenses rise gradually.
Mumbai Taxi Fare To Rise From ₹31 To ₹33
The minimum fare for Mumbai’s black-and-yellow taxis will increase from ₹31 to ₹33.
The revised rate will also be ₹33 per kilometre as per the new fare structure.
Although the ₹2 increase may seem small, it could add up for people who regularly use taxis for office travel, railway station trips and other daily journeys.
Why Are Mumbai Auto And Taxi Fares Increasing?
The fare revision comes amid rising operating costs for drivers.
Transport unions have been seeking higher fares, citing expenses such as:
Fuel and CNG costs
Vehicle maintenance
Insurance premiums
Tyres and repairs
Permit-related expenses
Higher CNG prices have also increased the daily running costs of autos and taxis, putting pressure on drivers’ earnings.
New Fares Will Apply Across MMR
The fare hike is not limited to Mumbai city.
The revised rates will apply across the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including Thane, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan, Vasai-Virar and Panvel.
This means commuters travelling between different parts of the MMR will also have to pay the revised fares from September 1.
The region has around 3 lakh registered autorickshaws and 30,000 taxis, so the change could affect a large number of daily journeys.
When Was The Last Fare Hike?
Mumbai’s previous major auto and taxi fare revision came into effect in February 2025.
At that time, the minimum autorickshaw fare increased from ₹23 to ₹26.
The minimum black-and-yellow taxi fare was also raised from ₹28 to ₹31.
The latest revision comes roughly one-and-a-half years after that increase.
Will App-Based Cab And Auto Fares Also Increase?
The approved revision mainly applies to regulated autorickshaw and taxi meter fares.
App-based services may have different pricing systems, including platform fees and surge pricing.
Therefore, the new meter fares do not necessarily mean that every app-based ride will become costlier by the same amount.
The final price on such platforms will depend on the individual service’s pricing structure.
What Commuters Should Know
The new fares will officially apply from September 1, 2026.
Passengers should check that drivers are using the revised meter rates once the new fare structure comes into effect.
A fare hike does not mean passengers should be charged an amount significantly higher than the applicable metered fare.
For occasional travellers, the impact may be limited. But for daily commuters who depend on autos and taxis for multiple trips, the additional cost could become noticeable over time.
