Indian Railways is set for a major milestone on July 17, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate several key railway projects across the country.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to open five redeveloped railway stations in Punjab and Rajasthan and flag off India’s first hydrogen-powered train.
These projects are aimed at improving passenger facilities, modernizing railway infrastructure, and promoting eco-friendly transport.
Five Railway Stations Get a Modern Upgrade
Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, four railway stations in Punjab have been redeveloped with improved passenger amenities.
PM Modi is expected to inaugurate Jalandhar Cantonment Railway Station in person, while the following stations will be dedicated to the nation virtually:
S.A.S. Nagar (Mohali)
Sri Muktsar Sahib
Sri Anandpur Sahib
The upgraded stations now feature modern waiting areas, better accessibility, lifts, escalators, improved platforms, spacious concourses, and upgraded passenger facilities while preserving their local architectural style.
In Rajasthan, the Gangapur City Railway Station will also be inaugurated after being redeveloped at an estimated cost of around Rs 25 crore.
The station now includes:
Air-conditioned waiting lounge
Lifts and escalators
Modern toilets
Digital train information boards
Coach position display systems
Improved signboards
Nearly 10,000-square-metre circulating area
Officials say the redevelopment will offer passengers a safer and more comfortable travel experience while supporting tourism and local businesses.
India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Train to Begin Service
Another major highlight of the day will be the launch of India’s first hydrogen-powered train.
The new train will operate on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, covering the 89-km journey in about two hours with stops at 12 stations.
The train will consist of:
8 passenger coaches
2 driving power cars
A total of 10 coaches
It is also expected to be one of the world’s longest hydrogen-powered trains.
Cleaner Technology for Indian Railways
Unlike diesel trains, the hydrogen-powered train uses hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity for traction.
This technology helps reduce carbon emissions and supports cleaner, more sustainable rail transportation.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini described the project as a historic achievement for Indian Railways and said it will strengthen India’s push toward green mobility.
With the launch of modern railway stations and the country’s first hydrogen train, Indian Railways is taking another major step toward improving passenger convenience while adopting environmentally friendly technology.
