Indian Railways has updated ticket cancellation rules to make the system fairer for passengers and prevent misuse by touts involved in black marketing.

The new rules also give travelers more flexibility when changing their boarding stations.

Here’s a simple breakdown of the changes and what they mean for you.

New cancellation rules and refunds

Under the revised system, refunds now depend on how much time is left before the train departs:

More than 72 hours before departure: Maximum refund with a flat cancellation charge per passenger

Between 72 and 24 hours: 25% of fare deducted

Between 24 and 8 hours: 50% of fare deducted

Less than 8 hours: No refund

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw explained that these rules will help curb ticket hoarding by touts, who previously booked extra tickets and canceled unsold ones to claim refunds.

The new rules will be implemented in phases from April 1 to April 15, 2026.

Flexibility to change boarding stations

Passengers can now change their boarding station up to 30 minutes before departure, even if the train chart is already prepared.

This is especially useful for cities with multiple stations, allowing travelers to choose a station most convenient for them.

Previously, boarding changes were only allowed before chart preparation.

This move makes train travel more flexible and convenient, particularly in big cities.

Why it matters

These updates aim to:

Reduce misuse of the ticketing system by touts

Provide passengers with more control over last-minute travel plans

Make refunds and boarding changes more structured and fair

Passengers are advised to keep track of the updated rules to avoid losing money on cancellations and make the most of flexible boarding options.

This revision shows Indian Railways’ focus on fairness and passenger convenience, while also tackling the problem of ticket hoarding and black marketing.
