The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a major incentive for female students.
To encourage higher education and reward academic excellence, the Yogi Adityanath-led cabinet has approved the Rani Lakshmibai Scooty Scheme.
The decision was taken during the cabinet meeting held on July 21.
Under the scheme, thousands of meritorious girl students across the state will receive free scooters from the government.
Who Will Get a Free Scooty?
Under the Rani Lakshmibai Scooty Scheme, the top five female students from every college and university in the 2025-26 academic session will receive a free scooter.
The scheme covers students studying in:
Government colleges
Private colleges
Aided colleges
Self-financed colleges
State universities
Private universities recognized in Uttar Pradesh
Students must secure a place among the top performers in their respective college or university to become eligible.
Around 50,000 Girls to Benefit
Higher Education Minister Yogendra Upadhyaya said that the scheme will benefit meritorious female students based on their academic performance.
The government has allocated around ₹400 crore for the scheme this year, and nearly 50,000 girl students are expected to receive free scooters in the first phase.
Special Relaxation for Certain Students
The state government has also announced special provisions under the scheme.
The income limit and merit criteria will not apply to:
Destitute girl students
Divyang (disabled) students
Daughters or dependents of martyrs
The Chief Minister has directed that these eligible students should receive scooters without these conditions.
What Benefits Will Students Receive?
Apart from the scooter, the government will also bear several additional expenses.
Selected students will receive:
A free scooter
Registration charges paid by the government
Insurance cost covered
5 litres of petrol at the time of delivery
Eligibility for Rani Lakshmibai Scooty Scheme
To apply for the scheme, students must meet the following conditions:
Must be a permanent resident of Uttar Pradesh.
Family’s annual income should not exceed ₹10 lakh.
Must have studied in a recognized college or university in Uttar Pradesh.
Must rank among the top five students in graduation or post-graduation examinations in their college or university.
