The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a new Aadhaar App, designed to make accessing Aadhaar-related services simpler and safer.
The app also strengthens offline identity verification, making it easier for people to prove their identity without relying on constant internet access.
This digital platform is especially useful for Offline Verification Seeking Entities (OVSEs), allowing them to verify Aadhaar holders through Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials (VCs).
These credentials work without needing real-time connection to UIDAI’s central database, enabling smooth and consent-based verification even in areas with poor connectivity.
Key Features for Aadhaar Holders
The Aadhaar App gives users more control over their personal information.
Some of the main features include:
Update Aadhaar details directly through the app.
View authentication history logs to track verification activity.
One-click biometric lock/unlock for enhanced security.
Share verifiable credentials that are digitally signed, tamper-proof, and independently verifiable.
Users can share these credentials via QR code scanning, app-to-app transfer, web-to-app sharing, or self-sharing, offering flexible options for different situations.
Offline Verification and Selective Data Sharing
One standout feature is selective data sharing, which allows users to share only specific information, like name, address, date of birth, or photo, rather than their full Aadhaar details.
This approach protects privacy while giving organisations only the information they actually need.
The app also supports face verification on the device itself, so proof of presence can be confirmed without connecting to the UIDAI database.
OVSEs can generate digitally signed credentials that are securely stored and comply with UIDAI regulations.
Why This Matters
Offline Aadhaar verification opens up many opportunities for both public and private organisations to develop paperless, secure identity solutions.
By allowing locally verifiable and consent-driven identity checks, the app makes identity verification faster, safer, and scalable.
In the future, UIDAI plans to expand the offline verification system to include interoperability with other digital ID systems and potentially cross-border use, where allowed by law.
Continuous awareness programs and training for OVSEs will be key to ensure the app is adopted responsibly and effectively.
