RBI Eases Currency Rules for Travelers to Nepal and Bhutan

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has updated its rules on using Indian currency in Nepal.

Now, travelers can carry ₹200 and ₹500 notes when visiting Nepal.

Earlier, these high-value notes were not allowed, which caused problems for tourists, traders, and daily travelers.

This change comes as part of RBI’s amendment to foreign exchange management rules.

Travelers from India to Nepal or Bhutan can now carry up to ₹25,000 in Indian currency, including ₹200 and ₹500 notes.

The same limit applies when returning from Nepal or Bhutan to India.

Benefits for Travelers and Businesses

This move aims to strengthen economic and social ties between India and Nepal.

Thousands of people cross the India-Nepal border every day, including tourists, businesspeople, and Nepalese workers coming to India for employment.

Previously, black marketing and difficulties in currency exchange were common problems.

Now, with the new rules, exchanging money will be much easier.

Nepal Rastra Bank has approved the change and prepared systems to facilitate smooth currency exchange for travelers.

This step will make tourism, trade, and daily travel more convenient for everyone.

Who Can Use This Facility?

It’s important to note that this facility is available only for citizens of Nepal and Bhutan.

Travelers from countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh are not eligible for this exemption.

Overall, the change reflects the strong relationship between India and Nepal and is expected to simplify cross-border transactions while supporting tourism and business.
