India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has increased its fuel surcharge once again for tickets booked from April 2.
This is the second hike in less than three weeks, mainly due to a sharp rise in jet fuel prices.
Fuel costs have surged significantly, putting pressure on airlines and pushing ticket prices higher.
Why Are Airfares Increasing?
The main reason behind this hike is the sharp jump in Air Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices.
According to industry data, fuel prices in the region have risen over 130% in just one month.
Since fuel makes up nearly 40% of airline operating costs, airlines have little choice but to pass on some of this burden to passengers.
New Domestic Fuel Charges Explained
For domestic flights, the increase has been partially controlled to reduce the impact on travellers.
The government has allowed only a limited pass-through of costs, so fares don’t rise too sharply.
Here’s how the new charges look:
Up to 500 km: Rs 275
501–1,000 km: Rs 400
1,001–1,500 km: Rs 600
1,501–2,000 km: Rs 800
Above 2,000 km: Rs 950
This means longer flights will now cost noticeably more than before.
International Flights See Bigger Impact
The situation is more serious for international routes.
Fuel prices for global operations have more than doubled, leading to higher surcharges:
Short-haul routes: starting from Rs 900
Gulf and Middle East: Rs 3,000–Rs 5,000
Southeast Asia & China: Rs 3,500–Rs 5,000
Long-haul (UK, Europe): up to Rs 10,000
This makes international travel significantly more expensive.
Airline Says It’s Not Passing Full Cost
IndiGo has clarified that the increase is only a partial adjustment.
If the airline passed on the full fuel cost, ticket prices would rise even more.
The airline also noted that government support helped limit the impact, especially for domestic passengers.
Final Takeaway
Air travel is getting costlier, and fuel prices are the main reason.
With jet fuel costs rising sharply, airlines like IndiGo are adjusting fares carefully to balance costs and passenger affordability.
For now, travellers should expect higher ticket prices, especially for longer and international routes.
