Auto rickshaw travel in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad could soon become more expensive.
The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has approved a proposal to increase auto fares, and it is now awaiting final approval from the Regional Transport Authority (RTA).
If the proposal is approved, the new fares are expected to come into effect from August 1, after auto meters are recalibrated.
Proposed Auto Fare Changes
Under the proposed revision, passengers may have to pay more for both the minimum fare and the distance travelled.
The proposed rates are:
Minimum fare (first 1.5 km): ₹25 to ₹30
Every additional kilometre: ₹17 to ₹20
If implemented, this will be the first fare hike in nearly four years and will affect thousands of people who rely on auto rickshaws for daily travel.
Why Is the Fare Being Increased?
Auto rickshaw unions have been demanding a fare revision, saying that operating costs have increased significantly.
According to the unions, higher CNG prices, inflation, and rising maintenance expenses have made it difficult for drivers to continue with the current fare structure.
They also said that the proposed increase is moderate and lower than the maximum hike that could have been allowed under the recommendations of the Khatua Committee.
Final Approval Is Still Pending
Although the Pune RTO has approved the proposal, the revised fares will become official only after they are cleared by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), which is headed by the Pune District Collector.
Once approved, authorities will begin recalibrating auto meters across the city.
Until all meters are updated, commuters may be provided with an official fare chart to help calculate the correct fare.
Passengers Want Better Service Too
The proposed fare hike has received mixed reactions from commuters.
Many passengers understand that rising fuel prices have increased drivers’ expenses. However, they also expect better service in return.
Some of the common complaints include:
Refusal to accept short-distance rides
Overcharging passengers
Asking for fares higher than those shown on ride-hailing apps
Many commuters believe that if fares are increased, authorities should also take stricter action against such practices.
What It Means for Daily Commuters
Pune has nearly 2 lakh auto rickshaws, making them one of the city’s most important modes of public transport.
If the new fare proposal gets final approval, daily travel costs will increase for many passengers.
At the same time, the revised fares are expected to provide financial relief to auto drivers dealing with rising fuel and operating expenses.
