If you’re planning to send a Rakhi, important documents, or bank papers through India Post Speed Post, there are some important changes you should know.
The Postal Department has introduced new Speed Post rules and revised charges from August 1, 2026.
The biggest changes include a clear distinction between documents and parcels, along with the launch of new 24-hour and 48-hour express delivery services in selected cities.
What Will Be Treated as a Document?
To make the process simpler, India Post has clearly defined which items will be considered documents.
The following items now fall under the document category:
PAN Card
Aadhaar and other UIDAI-issued ID cards
Voter ID
Driving Licence
Passport
Bank passbooks
Cheque books
Bank statements
Credit and debit cards
Insurance documents
Bank welcome kits
Greeting cards
Non-commercial Rakhi envelopes and small packets weighing up to 500 grams
These items will be processed as documents instead of parcels.
Which Items Will Be Considered Parcels?
Any item that is not included in the document category will be treated as a parcel.
Some examples include:
Mobile phones
Electronic gadgets
Clothes and garments
Gift items
Other bulky or commercial articles
The category of your item will determine the applicable Speed Post charges.
New 24-Hour and 48-Hour Speed Post Service
India Post has also launched two new premium delivery services for faster shipping.
24 Speed Post: Aims to deliver articles within 24 hours of booking.
48 Speed Post: Ensures delivery within 48 hours.
At present, these services are available only in six major cities:
Delhi
Mumbai
Chennai
Kolkata
Bengaluru
Hyderabad
The new express services are expected to benefit banks, businesses, and people who frequently send important documents.
New Speed Post Charges
From August 1, Speed Post charges for retail customers will depend on the weight of the article, delivery distance, and service selected. GST will be charged separately.
Some of the revised rates include:
Local delivery (up to 50 grams): ₹38 per article
Anywhere in India (up to 50 grams): ₹94 per article
51–250 grams: ₹118 to ₹154 per article
251–500 grams: ₹140 to ₹186 per article
48 Speed Post: ₹61 to ₹121 per article (depending on distance and weight)
