Mumbai is set to introduce a new way to travel — the Mumbai Water Metro.

This eco-friendly water transport system will start operations in phases from December 2026.

The project aims to reduce traffic congestion, shorten commute times, and provide a greener alternative for daily commuters and tourists.

The initiative, led by Maharashtra’s Ports Minister Nitesh Rane, will feature battery-powered ferries and electric boats running on designated routes across the city and suburbs.

Inspired by the successful Kochi Water Metro in Kerala, Mumbai’s system promises faster, sustainable travel along the coastlines and creeks.

How the Water Metro Will Work

The Mumbai Water Metro will operate like a “metro on water,” connecting jetties and waterfront points across the city.

The estimated cost of the project is ₹1,200 crore. Officials plan six to eight routes within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with the first two routes expected to launch after technical and feasibility checks.

A Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared, and discussions are ongoing with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis about the final routes and phase rollout.

Key Routes and Connectivity

Though the final route map isn’t out yet, early plans suggest the metro will link major areas such as Nariman Point, Worli, Bandra, Juhu, and Versova.

Commuters will be able to enjoy faster, scenic trips along the Arabian Sea and city creeks.

In the future, the Water Metro may allow passengers to reach Navi Mumbai International Airport from central Mumbai in just 40 minutes from certain jetties — a major improvement over road travel.

Affordable and Convenient Travel

Ticket prices have not been officially announced, but fares could be similar to Mumbai Metro prices, ranging from ₹10 to ₹50, with QR code and card payment options.

The system is expected to integrate with Mumbai’s existing transport network, including local trains, buses, and metro lines, making transfers smooth and convenient.

Why the Water Metro Matters

With Mumbai facing heavy traffic and rising commuter demand, the Water Metro offers a faster, greener, and scenic travel option.

By using the city’s natural waterways, the project aims to ease road congestion, cut pollution, and enhance urban mobility for millions of residents and visitors.

The Mumbai Water Metro could transform how the city moves, combining efficiency with sustainability in a unique way.
