The Government of India has launched a major relief initiative for road accident victims called PM RAHAT (Road Accident Victim Hospitalization and Assured Treatment).

The aim is simple — ensure that accident victims get immediate, cashless treatment during the crucial “golden hour” after a crash.

Many lives are lost because treatment is delayed due to money problems or paperwork at hospitals.

This scheme is designed to remove those barriers and help victims get treated without worrying about costs.

Cashless Treatment Up to ₹1.5 Lakh

Under PM RAHAT, accident victims can receive cashless treatment up to ₹1.5 lakh.

The coverage is available for seven days from the date of the accident.

The scheme applies to accidents happening on national highways, state highways, and even city roads across India.

If the injury is not life-threatening, stabilization treatment will be provided for 24 hours.

In serious cases, coverage may be extended up to 48 hours after digital verification.

This ensures that victims receive urgent medical attention without delay.

Linked Directly to Emergency Helpline 112

The scheme is integrated with Emergency Response Support System (ERSS 112).

In case of an accident, victims or bystanders can simply dial 112.

The system will help locate the nearest authorized hospital and arrange ambulance support.

This digital coordination between police, ambulance services, and hospitals is expected to save critical time when every minute matters.

Who Pays the Hospital Bills?

Hospitals will not have to chase patients for payment.

Reimbursement will be made through the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVAF).

If the vehicle involved in the accident is insured, the insurance company will pay for the treatment.

In hit-and-run cases or accidents involving uninsured vehicles, the government will bear the full cost through budget allocation.

Faster Payments to Hospitals

To make the system smooth, State Health Agencies have been directed to settle approved claims within 10 days.

This time-bound process encourages hospitals — both private and government — to start treatment immediately without worrying about payment delays.

With PM RAHAT, the government aims to build a stronger health safety net where accident victims get immediate care and hospitals receive guaranteed payments.
