State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest public sector bank, serves over 52 crore customers.

Because of this massive user base, SBI customers have now become a major target for cyber fraudsters.

Hackers are sending fake messages on WhatsApp to trick users into downloading harmful apps.

SBI has officially warned customers about this new scam.

Fake WhatsApp Message Targeting SBI Customers

SBI recently shared details of a fraud case where customers received WhatsApp messages claiming their YONO account would be blocked.

The message falsely stated that the customer’s Aadhaar was not updated and that the YONO app would be deactivated by night.

To create panic, users were asked to download an “official” Aadhaar update app.

The message even carried a file named “SBI KYC AADHAR UPDATE.apk”, along with a large SBI YONO logo to make it look genuine.

How This Scam Works

This is a classic attempt to scare users into acting quickly.

Once the fake APK file is installed, scammers can gain access to sensitive information such as banking details and passwords.

SBI has clarified that it never asks customers to download apps through APK files, nor does it send threatening messages on WhatsApp or SMS.

Similar scams were reported earlier as well.

In 2024, fraudsters used the same method by claiming reward points had expired and shared fake app files.

Important Safety Tips for SBI Customers

Always remember that the SBI YONO app should only be downloaded from the official app store.

Do not click on unknown links or download files received on WhatsApp or SMS, even if they appear to be from SBI.

If you receive such a message, immediately block the sender and report it.

What To Do If You Receive a Fraud Message

SBI customers can report cyber fraud by calling the cybercrime helpline number 1930.

You can also file a complaint online through the official cybercrime reporting portal.

Staying alert and informed is the best way to protect your bank account from online fraud.
