Overdraft Facility of Rs 10,000 available in Jan Dhan accounts

The Narendra Modi government’s flagship scheme, Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), has completed 11 years.

During this time, the number of accounts opened under the scheme has reached 56.16 crore, and a total of ₹2.68 lakh crore has been deposited in these accounts.

The scheme offers several benefits to account holders, one of which is the overdraft facility.

Overdraft Facility in Jan Dhan Accounts

Under PMJDY, beneficiaries can use the overdraft facility up to ₹10,000.

This means that even if there is not enough balance in the account, the account holder can still withdraw or spend money within this limit.

Along with this, all account holders get a free RuPay debit card which includes an accident insurance cover of ₹2 lakh.

Key Statistics of Jan Dhan Yojana

According to the Finance Ministry, the scheme has shown significant growth:

The number of accounts increased from 14.72 crore in March 2015 to 56.16 crore by 13 August 2025.

56% of account holders are women.

67% of the accounts are in rural and semi-urban areas.

Through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), a total of ₹45 lakh crore has been directly sent to beneficiaries.

94% of India’s adult population now has a bank account.

RuPay Debit Cards and Other Benefits

So far, 38.68 crore RuPay debit cards have been issued under PMJDY. These cards help in cashless transactions and provide built-in accident insurance cover.
