India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) has introduced a new savings account specially designed for Self Help Groups (SHGs).
This zero-balance account aims to make banking easier and more affordable, especially for women-led groups in rural areas.
It is part of the government’s push to improve financial inclusion and support small community businesses.
The initiative also supports programmes like the National Rural Livelihoods Mission, which focuses on boosting rural incomes.
Key Features That Make It Attractive
This SHG savings account is designed to be simple and low-cost.
There is no need to maintain any minimum balance, and there are no charges for opening or closing the account.
Groups can deposit or withdraw money without paying any fees.
The account allows a maximum balance of up to ₹2 lakh.
Interest is paid every quarter, helping savings grow steadily over time.
It also offers one free account statement every month, making it easier to track transactions.
Easy Account Opening Process
Opening this account is straightforward.
You just need to visit a nearby post office or IPPB outlet.
Carry basic documents like Aadhaar, PAN, group proof, and photographs.
The process can be done digitally or through a physical form, making it accessible even in remote areas.
Charges and Interest Rates Explained
While the account itself is free, a few small charges apply for specific services.
For example, SMS alerts cost ₹0.25 per message, with a quarterly cap.
If you request a balance certificate, there is a ₹50 fee.
Transactions done through the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System outside the IPPB network may also attract small charges after a free limit.
As for interest:
Up to ₹1 lakh: 2% per year
₹1 lakh to ₹2 lakh: 2.25% per year
The interest is credited every quarter.
What You Don’t Get in This Account
To keep things simple, some features are not included.
There is no mobile banking access, no nomination facility, and no option for bill payments or recharges.
You also won’t get a virtual debit card or standing instruction facility.
This ensures the account remains focused on basic savings and group transactions.
Who Should Consider This Account?
This account is ideal for small groups involved in local businesses.
It suits activities like small trading, dairy farming, tailoring, handicrafts, and similar micro-enterprises.
With zero balance requirements and no hidden charges, it helps SHGs manage their money easily while earning steady interest.
Banking Reaching Every Corner
IPPB already serves customers across more than 5.5 lakh villages and towns.
With its strong post office network and digital platform, it is making banking more accessible, even in remote areas.
This new SHG account is another step toward empowering rural communities and supporting small-scale economic growth.
