Owning a home in Delhi is a dream for many people. While rising property prices and construction costs are already major challenges, homeowners may soon have another important requirement to consider — fire safety.
The Delhi government is planning to introduce stricter safety rules that could make certain fire protection measures mandatory in homes.
Smoke Detectors and Fire Extinguishers May Become Mandatory
According to the proposed rules, every newly built home may be required to have two important safety devices:
Smoke Detector
Fire Extinguisher
The requirement will not be limited to apartment societies. Independent houses may also have to install these safety devices.
The move comes amid growing concerns over the increasing number of fire incidents reported across Delhi.
Government Reviewing New Fire Safety Proposal
Officials from the Home Department said that a proposal submitted by the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) is currently under review.
They believe that installing smoke detectors in homes can help detect fires at an early stage, reducing damage to property and saving lives.
The proposal is expected to be sent to the Delhi Cabinet for approval soon.
According to DFS data, around 20,000 fire incidents are reported in Delhi every year, leading to nearly 250 to 300 deaths.
Important Fire Safety Tips for Homeowners
The government has also highlighted several safety measures that residents should follow to reduce fire risks:
Get the electrical system checked if you notice frequent circuit trips or flickering lights.
Install safety devices such as circuit breakers.
Properly secure wiring joints and avoid temporary insulation tape.
Keep electrical appliances away from water.
Charge lithium batteries only in open and well-ventilated spaces.
Never use a lift during a fire emergency.
Inspect old wiring and electricity meters regularly and replace them if needed.
Keep staircases, exits, and emergency routes free from obstructions.
Resident Welfare Associations Also Have a Role
The government has advised Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) to inform nearby fire stations about gates that remain open during the night.
This can help fire tenders reach affected areas more quickly during emergencies and improve response times.
If approved, the new rules could make homes across Delhi safer and help reduce the number of fire-related accidents in the city.
