India is changing the way its highways are built.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is now making Automated and Intelligent Machine-Aided Construction (AI-MC) mandatory for large highway projects.
The move could bring a major change to road construction, with machines, sensors and real-time data playing a much bigger role in monitoring construction quality.
The new rule will apply to highway projects that are more than 20 km long and cost over ₹500 crore.
What Is AI-MC and How Will It Work?
AI-MC combines construction machines with computers, sensors and positioning technology.
Equipment such as graders, pavers, compactors and dozers can collect information while construction is taking place.
This allows engineers and authorities to track whether the work is being done according to the required standards.
Instead of checking only the finished road, NHAI will be able to monitor several stages of construction as they happen.
These include embankment work, subgrade preparation and granular sub-base construction.
NHAI Will Get Real-Time Construction Data
One of the biggest changes under the new system is continuous data sharing.
Earlier, authorities often depended on physical inspections and records provided by contractors.
With AI-MC, construction information can be collected and shared digitally in real time.
This means any mistake or deviation from the required specifications could potentially be detected while the work is still underway.
That could make it easier to fix problems before an entire road section is completed.
Contractors Will Face Greater Accountability
The technology could also make it harder to compromise on construction quality.
Since machines will continuously record construction activity, there will be a clearer digital trail of how the work was carried out.
For contractors, however, this also means new responsibilities.
Companies may need to invest in AI-enabled machinery, sensors, software and trained workers.
Some contractors may also be concerned about sharing live construction data because greater monitoring means greater accountability.
AI-MC Has Already Been Tested in India
This technology is not completely new to India’s highway sector.
AI-MC was previously used during the construction of the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway.
However, its use was not uniform throughout the entire project.
NHAI’s latest move signals a bigger change.
Instead of using the technology only on selected sections, the authority now wants AI-based machine control to become a regular part of construction on qualifying large projects.
Could This Mean Better Roads and Fewer Repairs?
The main goal is not simply to put smarter machines on construction sites.
Better measurement and continuous monitoring could help reduce construction defects and improve the overall quality and durability of highways.
If problems are detected early, they may also be fixed before they become expensive repairs later.
For India’s rapidly growing highway network, this could become an important step toward more transparent and technology-driven construction.
A New Era for Highway Construction?
NHAI’s decision represents a shift in how road quality is monitored.
Instead of mainly asking whether the finished road meets the required standards, authorities will have greater visibility into how the road was actually built.
If implemented properly, AI-MC could give NHAI more control over major highway projects and strengthen accountability among contractors.
But the success of the system will depend on more than just installing smart equipment.
