Several government schemes are available for workers in the unorganized sector. One such scheme offers a guaranteed pension of ₹3,000 per month.
The scheme can be joined with a monthly contribution starting from just ₹55. It is called the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan Yojana (PM-SYM). The Modi government launched this scheme in February 2019.
Who Can Join PM-SYM?
The scheme is mainly for workers in the unorganized sector. Street vendors, rickshaw pullers, laborers, domestic workers such as maids, and agricultural workers can apply.
To join the scheme, a person must be between 18 and 40 years old and their monthly income must be ₹15,000 or less.
The applicant should also not be an income taxpayer and should not be a member of another government social security scheme, such as EPFO, ESIC, or NPS.
Government Also Pays 50% of the Contribution
One of the biggest benefits of PM-SYM is that the government contributes 50% of the monthly contribution. In other words, the scheme works on a 1:1 matching contribution basis.
For example, if you contribute ₹55 per month, the Government of India will also contribute ₹55 to your pension account. This means a total of ₹110 will be deposited every month.
The amount you need to contribute increases with age, while the government’s contribution matches your contribution.
How to Apply for the Scheme?
Eligible workers can register by visiting their nearest Common Service Center (CSC). They can also apply online through the official Shram Yogi Maandhan Portal.
To register, you need an Aadhaar card and a Savings Bank Account or Jan Dhan Account that supports monthly auto-debit.
As of July 2026, more than 5.4 million beneficiaries have registered under the scheme. There are around 400,000 Common Service Centers across the country, making it easier for eligible workers to enroll.
