Tired of paying toll charges every time you cross a toll plaza near your home?
There is now an easier option for eligible local residents.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has expanded its digital Local Pass facility to 121 toll plazas across the country.
Eligible residents can now apply for the pass online through the RajmargYatra app and get unlimited crossings at their designated toll plaza for a fixed monthly fee.
Who Can Get the Digital Local Pass?
The facility is available to residents who live within 20 kilometres of a toll plaza.
However, the pass is meant only for non-commercial vehicles.
The entire application process has been moved online. Applicants do not need to visit the toll plaza with physical documents.
The system uses DigiLocker to verify the address, the VAHAN database to check vehicle details, and the applicant’s linked FASTag information.
This makes the process faster and more convenient for eligible commuters.
Monthly Pass Costs Just ₹350
Under the National Highway user fee rules, eligible local residents can get the monthly pass for ₹350.
Once the pass is activated, it allows eligible vehicles to cross the designated toll plaza as per the local-pass rules without paying the regular toll each time.
The pass must be presented through the applicable toll system for clearance.
For people who regularly use the same toll plaza, this could mean significant convenience compared with making individual toll payments.
Why Has NHAI Introduced This Digital System?
The digital pass is also linked to India’s move towards Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling.
Under MLFF, vehicles can pass through toll points without stopping at traditional toll booths.
The system is already operational at six locations: Choryasi, Mundka, Daulatpura, Gharaunda, Manoharpur and Shahjahanpur.
The first MLFF system was launched at the Mundka-Bakkarwala Toll Plaza in Delhi in July 2026.
But the shift to barrier-free tolling also created a problem for some local residents.
Local Residents Could Face Notices Without a Pass
Officials found that some people living within the 20-kilometre radius were receiving e-notices for unpaid toll charges.
Earlier, toll booths had human intervention that sometimes helped local commuters get through based on local arrangements.
With automated tolling, that informal process is no longer available.
As a result, eligible residents are expected to obtain the digital local pass and link it with their FASTag.
Failing to pay the applicable toll could lead to penalties, including double the toll amount in certain cases.
More Toll Plazas Added to the List
The RajmargYatra app now provides the updated list of toll plazas where the digital local pass facility is available.
Newly added locations include:
Bartana — Haryana
Bharatkund — Uttar Pradesh
Bhramanapalli — Andhra Pradesh
Boothakudi — Tamil Nadu
Chikhalikala — Madhya Pradesh
Devkuli — Bihar
With the service now available at 121 toll plazas, more local commuters can complete the process digitally instead of making repeated visits to toll plazas.
