CNG–PNG Costs Set to Fall Across Major Cities—Who Benefits?

People using CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) and PNG (Piped Natural Gas) may soon get relief. In the next 2–3 days, prices of CNG and PNG could come down in many cities across India.

According to sources, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has approved a new tariff regulation, paving the way for a price cut.

How Are CNG and PNG Prices Decided?

So far, the price of CNG and PNG depended on the distance between your area and the gas pipeline or station. Areas located farther from gas sources paid higher rates.

However, under the new rules, a unified tariff system is being introduced. This means prices will no longer vary based on distance — instead, all areas in a zone will have the same rate.

What Are the Benefits?

With the new system:

Cities like Ghaziabad and Meerut may get CNG-PNG at the same rates as Delhi.

Prices will reduce in cities that were earlier paying more due to distance.

Gas companies will be encouraged to expand their services in remote areas, making gas more available and affordable in those regions.

How Many Zones Will There Be Now?

Earlier, the country was divided into 3 tariff zones. Under the new rules, there will be only 2 zones, allowing more cities to benefit from the unified pricing system.

Where Will Prices Decrease, and Where Might They Increase?

In cities with high current prices (mainly far from pipelines), rates are expected to drop.

In some cities where gas is currently cheaper, prices may rise slightly.

However, most users across the country will benefit from this new system.

Why Is This Change Being Made?

The government’s goal is to provide:

12 crore domestic PNG connections

17,500 CNG stations by the year 2030

This move supports the “One Nation, One Tariff” policy and aims to ensure better access and uniform pricing of gas throughout India.

When Will the New Prices Be Implemented?

According to sources, the official notification of the new tariff rules may be issued within 2–3 days.

After that, companies will revise their rates, and consumers may soon see the impact in the form of lower gas bills.
