Expats living and working in Qatar should take note of an important rule change. The Qatari government has reduced the grace period available after a residence permit is cancelled.

Earlier, foreign residents had 30 days to either leave the country or arrange a new legal status. Now, that period has been cut in half to just 14 days.

New Rule Announced by Qatar Authorities

According to Gulf News, the change was announced by an official from Qatar’s Ministry of Interior during a webinar on safe travel procedures.

Captain Ali Ahmed Ali Al Kuwari from the airport passport department said that anyone whose residence permit is cancelled will now have only two weeks to remain in the country legally.

This means affected expats must quickly make arrangements to leave Qatar or secure another valid visa or employment opportunity within the new deadline.

Fine for Staying Beyond 14 Days

Authorities have also warned that anyone who remains in Qatar after the 14-day grace period will face a penalty.

A fine of 10 Qatari Riyals (around ₹230) per day will be charged for every extra day of overstay.

The announcement is especially important for thousands of Indian workers and professionals living in Qatar, as they may need to act much faster if their residence permit is cancelled.

Visitors Also Asked to Check Visa Validity

Qatar’s authorities have advised all visitors to regularly check their visa validity and the permitted duration of stay mentioned in their passports.

Officials clarified that overstaying after a visit visa expires can result in a much higher penalty of 200 Qatari Riyals (around ₹4,600) per day.

Travelers can verify their visa status through the Metrash mobile application before travelling.

Check Pending Fines Before Travel

Officials also recommended checking the Metrash app for any pending traffic violations, overstay fines, or other outstanding dues.

Unpaid penalties could create problems during travel or immigration procedures.

To make airport processing faster, passengers are encouraged to use the electronic gate system at Hamad International Airport.

The airport currently operates 76 e-gates across its arrival and departure terminals, helping travelers complete immigration formalities more quickly.
