UPI-Zelle link could make money transfers from the US to India faster and easier, as Bank of America is working on a pilot project to connect the US payment network Zelle with India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
The project is aimed at simplifying remittance transactions from the US to India. It could particularly benefit Indians living in the US and professionals working there.
The project is currently in the pilot stage, with initial availability expected before the end of 2026. However, the timeline is still subject to the progress and outcome of the pilot.
UPI-Zelle Link Targets Cross-Border Payments
The UPI-Zelle link is being developed in collaboration with Early Warning Services, the operator of the Zelle network. Zelle is a digital payment network used in the US, while UPI is India’s real-time digital payment system.
The proposed bridge is intended to connect the two payment networks for cross-border transactions. It does not mean that Indian UPI apps will automatically function in the US in the same way they do in India.
If the pilot is successful, the system could provide another way for people in the US to send money to recipients in India.
US Is a Major Source of Remittances to India
The US has become India’s largest source of remittances. India received around $135.46 billion in remittances during the 2024-25 financial year, with approximately $37 billion coming from the US.
The large volume of money sent from the US to India highlights the potential importance of a payment connection between the two countries.
For Indians receiving money from family members or professionals working in the US, a faster and more convenient cross-border payment system could make regular remittance transactions easier.
What the Zelle-UPI Bridge Could Mean
The proposed connection would bring two major payment networks closer for cross-border transfers. Zelle is widely used for digital payments in the US, while UPI has become a major part of India’s digital payment ecosystem.
However, the project is still being tested. Details about its final availability, supported users, transaction process and other features will depend on how the pilot develops.
For now, users should treat the expected launch before the end of 2026 as a reported timeline rather than a confirmed nationwide rollout.
