The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a strong weather warning for May 26, alerting several states about heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds,
and heatwave conditions at the same time. The weather is expected to remain highly unstable across different parts of the country.
According to the IMD, multiple weather systems are currently active, including a Western Disturbance near Jammu and a trough stretching from Bihar to coastal Andhra Pradesh.
The advancing Southwest Monsoon is also strengthening, which is adding more moisture and instability to the atmosphere.
Heavy to Very Heavy Rainfall Alert in Northeast and Eastern States
The most intense rainfall is expected in Northeast India on May 26.
Very heavy rain is likely in parts of Assam and Meghalaya, where conditions may turn severe. Heavy rainfall alerts have also been issued for Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
In eastern and southern India, heavy rain is expected in Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Kerala, Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Kerala may continue to receive heavy rainfall even beyond May 26.
Thunderstorms, Gusty Winds and Storm-Like Conditions
IMD has warned that several regions may face strong thunderstorms and high-speed winds.
Bihar, Jharkhand, and southern interior Karnataka are expected to experience the most severe conditions, with storm winds reaching 50–60 kmph.
Apart from this, wind speeds of 40–50 kmph along with lightning and dust storms are likely in states like Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, West Bengal, Sikkim, Maharashtra, Goa,
and parts of Karnataka and Kerala.
Some areas in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Northeast India may also see thunderstorms with wind speeds of 30–40 kmph, along with frequent lightning activity.
Heatwave to Continue in North and Central India
While rain and storms affect many regions, northern and central India will continue to face extreme heat.
Severe heatwave conditions are expected in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Telangana, and parts of Maharashtra and Uttarakhand.
The heatwave may persist in several states for the next two days, especially in Delhi-NCR, Punjab, and Haryana.
In addition, high humidity and sticky weather will trouble coastal regions like Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Goa, and West Bengal.
Night temperatures will also remain unusually high in many states, making conditions uncomfortable even after sunset.
Fishermen Alert: Dangerous Sea Conditions
IMD has also issued warnings for strong winds over the sea, making conditions unsafe for fishermen.
In the Arabian Sea, wind speeds may reach 40–50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph near the Kerala coast, Lakshadweep, and nearby regions.
In the Bay of Bengal, similar strong winds are expected over the Gulf of Mannar, Sri Lanka coast, and southern parts of the sea, making marine activities risky.
