Found a Rs 2,000 note in your wallet or at home? There’s no need to worry.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has once again confirmed that the Rs 2,000 note is still legal tender.
This means you can still exchange it or deposit it into your bank account.
Although the RBI withdrew the Rs 2,000 note from circulation in 2023, it has not been declared invalid.
If you still have one, you can follow the official process to get its value credited to your account.
Most Rs 2,000 Notes Have Already Returned
When the RBI announced the withdrawal of the Rs 2,000 note in May 2023, notes worth Rs 3.56 lakh crore were in circulation.
According to the latest figures available up to April 2026, only Rs 5,451 crore worth of these notes are still with the public.
This means 98.47% of all Rs 2,000 notes have already been returned to the RBI.
How Can You Exchange or Deposit the Note?
The facility to exchange Rs 2,000 notes at regular bank branches ended on October 7, 2023.
However, you still have two options.
Visit an RBI Issue Office
You can visit any of the RBI’s 19 Issue Offices to exchange your Rs 2,000 note or deposit it directly into your bank account.
Send It Through India Post
If you cannot visit an RBI office, you can send the note through India Post to any RBI Issue Office.
After the RBI receives your note, the amount will be deposited directly into your bank account.
