UIDAI Launches New Aadhaar Face Verification System

Aadhaar Face Authentication is set to become easier for customers as UIDAI has launched a new software development kit and testing platform for banks, fintech companies, insurers and other organisations.

The new tools are designed to bring face-based Aadhaar verification directly into mobile applications.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) launched the Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK and Sandbox at the Global Fintech Fest 2026.

The move is aimed at simplifying digital onboarding and reducing the need for customers to switch between different apps during identity verification.

How Aadhaar Face Authentication Will Work

The new SDK allows banks, insurance companies, brokerage firms, fintech platforms and other eligible organisations to integrate Aadhaar face authentication directly into their native Android and iOS applications.

Earlier, users undergoing Aadhaar face authentication could need the FaceRD application on their phones.

This meant that the onboarding process could involve an additional app and extra steps.

With the new SDK, the authentication journey can be built into the organisation’s own application.

This means a customer using a banking, insurance or broking app can complete the required face authentication within the same app, subject to the organisation integrating the facility.

The SDK also includes AI and machine-learning based liveness detection and anti-spoofing features.

UIDAI said it supports secure handling and encryption of authentication data and is designed to work on consumer smartphones.

UIDAI Launches Sandbox for Testing

Along with the SDK, UIDAI has introduced the Aadhaar Face Authentication Sandbox, a controlled environment where organisations can test the authentication process before deploying it for users.

Developers and quality assurance teams can use the Sandbox to test different stages of the process, including user provisioning and consent, face capture, liveness checks, authentication, error handling and response validation.

The testing platform can also simulate situations such as network interruptions, timeouts, invalid digital signatures and spoofing attempts.

Organisations can therefore check how their systems respond to different authentication and security-related problems before moving to a live environment.

The Sandbox does not require external biometric hardware for these tests, making it easier for organisations to validate their integration during development.

What This Means for Bank and Fintech Customers

For customers, the biggest expected change is a simpler digital onboarding experience.

Instead of moving between multiple applications, users may be able to complete Aadhaar-based identity verification inside the banking, insurance or broking application they are already using.

However, this facility will depend on individual organisations integrating the new UIDAI tools into their applications.

The launch does not mean that every banking or financial app will immediately offer the feature.

UIDAI said its face authentication technology was launched in 2021 and has since been adopted by nearly 200 entities.

These include government departments, banks, NBFCs, telecom operators, brokerage firms and other organisations.

The technology is already used for several services, including Digital Life Certificate submission by pensioners, Ayushman Bharat beneficiary onboarding, direct benefit transfer schemes, Aadhaar-enabled payments and SIM activation through e-KYC.

New Guide for BFSI Companies

UIDAI has also released a “Playbook on Ease of Onboarding” to guide entities in the banking, financial services and insurance sector that want to join the Aadhaar authentication ecosystem.

The latest tools are aimed at making digital identity verification more convenient while giving organisations a controlled way to integrate and test the technology.

For customers, the key benefit could be a shorter and smoother onboarding process as more institutions adopt the new system.
