If you travel by train using an unreserved ticket booked on your phone, this update from Indian Railways is important.
The Railways has clarified that an unreserved ticket received through WhatsApp, a screenshot, or any other shared method is not considered a valid travel ticket. This rule applies to tickets booked through the RailOne app.
Carry the Registered Phone and a Valid ID
Passengers who book an unreserved ticket through the RailOne app must carry the same mobile phone that was used to book the ticket. During ticket checking, they must also show a valid photo ID.
If a passenger only shows a WhatsApp copy of the ticket or a screenshot, the ticket may be treated as invalid. In such cases, the passenger could face a fine or other action under Railway rules.
What Railways Said About RailOne Tickets
According to Indian Railways, an unreserved ticket booked through the RailOne app is linked to the registered mobile number and the device used for booking.
This means the ticket is valid only when shown on that registered phone. A copy shared with another phone through WhatsApp or saved as a screenshot will not be accepted as proof of travel.
Why Screenshots and WhatsApp Tickets Are Not Accepted
Many passengers forward their tickets to family members or save screenshots for convenience.
However, Railways has clarified that these copies are only for reference and cannot be used as valid travel proof. Ticket verification will be done only through the original registered device. This rule has been introduced to reduce ticket misuse and prevent fraud.
Keep These Two Things During Your Journey
If you have booked an unreserved ticket through the RailOne app, make sure you carry:
The registered mobile phone used to book the ticket.
A valid photo ID such as an Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, Driving Licence, Passport, or any other accepted government-issued identity card.
The ticket checker may ask to verify both during the journey.
What Happens If You Don’t Follow the Rule?
If you cannot show the registered mobile phone and only present a WhatsApp copy or screenshot, your ticket may be treated as invalid.
In such a situation, the Railways can take action against the passenger according to its rules, including imposing a penalty.
