The Central Government is planning major changes to the Motor Vehicles Act that could make traffic rules much stricter for repeat offenders.

Under the proposed amendments, drivers who repeatedly violate traffic rules may have to retake their driving test before they can renew their driving licence.

The move aims to improve road safety and encourage responsible driving across the country.

Repeat Traffic Violators May Need a Fresh Driving Test

If the proposal becomes law, drivers who receive multiple traffic challans for repeated violations may no longer be able to renew their driving licence through the normal process.

Instead, they could be required to pass a fresh driving test to prove that they are fit to drive safely.

The proposal has already cleared an important stage and is expected to be introduced during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Faster Compensation for Road Accident Victims

The government is also planning to provide quicker financial relief to road accident victims and their families.

Under the proposed changes, Motor Accident Claims Tribunals (MACTs) may be allowed to grant interim compensation before the final compensation case is decided.

At present, many victims have to wait months or even years for compensation because of lengthy legal proceedings.

The new system aims to provide immediate financial support during this period.

Other Important Changes Under Consideration

The proposed amendments also include several other reforms, such as:

Stricter rules for suspended driving licences.

Changes to insurance-related provisions.

Higher appeal fees in certain cases.

Stronger measures to improve compliance with traffic laws.

According to officials, these steps are expected to reduce traffic violations and promote safer driving habits.

Government’s Focus Is Safer Roads

Road accidents remain a major concern in India, with thousands of people losing their lives or suffering injuries every year.

By introducing stricter rules for habitual traffic offenders and ensuring faster financial assistance for accident victims, the government hopes to improve road safety and strengthen the country’s traffic enforcement system.

If Parliament approves the proposed amendments, they could bring some of the biggest changes to India’s traffic laws in recent years.
