New OTP Rule for Traffic Challans in Delhi

People violating traffic rules in Delhi may now find it much harder to avoid paying challans. Delhi Traffic Police has introduced a new OTP-based verification system while issuing traffic challans.

The main aim of this new system is to stop people from providing fake or incorrect mobile numbers.

Earlier, many complaints revealed that challans were often sent to the wrong person because drivers gave false contact details. Some notices also failed to reach the actual vehicle owner on time.

Several users had also raised this issue on social media platforms and forums like Reddit.

How the New OTP Verification System Works

Under the new process, traffic police officials will first enter the driver’s mobile number while issuing a challan. After this, an OTP will be sent to that number.

The challan will only be generated after the OTP is successfully verified. If the OTP is not verified, the challan process will stop immediately.

According to officials, this step will help reduce fake mobile numbers, wrong entries, and system-related errors. It will also make the entire challan system more secure and transparent.

Wrong Mobile Numbers Will No Longer Be Accepted

Earlier, many people escaped challans by giving fake or outdated mobile numbers. In several cases, old contact details stored in the VAHAN database created problems for vehicle owners, as challan alerts never reached them.

With the new OTP system in place, only verified mobile numbers will be accepted. This is expected to improve the accuracy of traffic police records and help authorities contact the correct vehicle owner quickly.

Fake e-Challan Scams Are Also Increasing

At the same time, fake e-Challan scams have become a serious concern across the country. Fraudsters often send fake challan messages through WhatsApp and SMS.

These messages may contain APK files or fake payment links. Clicking on such links can lead to phone hacking, bank fraud, or stolen personal data.

To stay safe, people should remember a few important points:

Do not trust challan links received on WhatsApp or unknown SMS messages

Always check challan details only on the official government portal

Never share your UPI PIN, OTP, or bank details with anyone

Verify challans through the official Parivahan portal only
