Flying for the first time can be exciting, but airport procedures can feel confusing if you don’t know what to expect. From entering the airport to boarding your flight, there are several important steps every passenger must follow.

The good news is that once you understand the process, air travel becomes much easier. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you avoid common mistakes and enjoy a hassle-free journey.

Reach the Airport on Time

One of the biggest mistakes first-time flyers make is arriving late. Unlike train travel, airports have multiple checks before you can board your flight.

Here’s when you should reach the airport:

Domestic flights: Arrive at least 2 hours before departure.

International flights: Reach the airport 3 to 4 hours before departure.

Boarding time: Boarding usually begins around 45 minutes before takeoff, and the boarding gate generally closes 25 minutes before departure.

Missing the boarding deadline could mean missing your flight.

Documents You Need to Enter the Airport

Security staff at the airport entrance will check your travel documents before allowing entry.

Carry these with you:

Your flight ticket (printed or e-ticket on your phone).

A valid government photo ID such as an Aadhaar Card, Passport, Driving Licence, or Voter ID.

For international travel, carry your passport and visa.

If you’re travelling through major Indian airports, you can also use the DigiYatra app. It uses facial recognition to speed up airport entry and reduce waiting time.

Know the Baggage Rules Before You Pack

Packing correctly can save you from delays and extra charges at the airport.

Check-in baggage: Large suitcases that are handed over at the airline counter. Most domestic airlines allow up to 15 kg.

Cabin baggage: Small bags or laptop bags that you carry inside the aircraft. The usual limit is 7 kg.

Avoid keeping these items in your cabin bag:

Knives, scissors, matches, or lighters.

Liquids over 100 ml.

Also remember that power banks, laptops, cameras, chargers, and other battery-powered devices must always be carried in your cabin bag. They are not allowed inside checked baggage.

Complete Check-in Before Security

After entering the airport, you must collect your boarding pass before heading to security.

You have two options:

Web Check-in: Most airlines allow free online check-in up to 48 hours before departure. This helps you skip long queues.

Airport Check-in Counter: If you haven’t checked in online, visit your airline’s counter to submit your luggage and collect your boarding pass.

As per DGCA rules, airlines must keep at least 60% of seats available for free seat selection.

What Happens During the Security Check?

Security screening is compulsory for every passenger.

Before your bags are scanned, place the following items in the security tray:

Laptop

Mobile phone

Power bank

Charger

Belt

Jacket

Wallet or purse

Heavy watch or other metal items

Your cabin bag will go through an X-ray scanner, while you will walk through a metal detector and may also undergo a physical security check.

Boarding the Flight

Once you clear security, check your boarding gate number on your boarding pass and verify it on the airport display screens.

When boarding starts:

Go to the announced boarding gate.

Show your boarding pass for scanning.

Enter the aircraft through an aerobridge or airport shuttle bus.

Find your assigned seat using the seat number printed on your boarding pass.

Following these simple steps will make your first flight much smoother and help you travel with confidence.
