NHAI Digital FASTag Local Pass is now available at more than 121 toll plazas across India, making it easier for eligible local commuters to travel without repeated toll payments.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has expanded the digital facility under the Digital India initiative, allowing users to apply for a monthly local pass online without visiting a toll plaza.

The digital system removes the need for physical paperwork and long queues. Eligible vehicle owners can get an unlimited monthly travel pass by paying a fee of around ₹340 to ₹350.

NHAI Digital FASTag Local Pass eligibility

The monthly local pass is available only for non-commercial private vehicles. To qualify, the registered address of the vehicle owner must be within a 20-kilometre radius of the concerned toll plaza.

Earlier, applicants had to visit toll plazas and submit documents such as address proof and the vehicle registration certificate. With the new digital process, the entire application is now paperless and can be completed online.

How the verification process works

NHAI has integrated the digital pass system with DigiLocker and government vehicle databases to speed up verification.

The system also uses GIS-based automatic verification to check whether the applicant’s registered address falls within the required 20-kilometre distance from the selected toll plaza.

After users submit their details, the system automatically verifies the Aadhaar-linked address, vehicle registration details and FASTag information. Once the applicant is found eligible, the digital local pass is issued without manual intervention.

How the digital pass helps commuters

Many highways are gradually adopting barrier-free Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll collection, where RFID readers and cameras automatically deduct toll charges through FASTag.

In some cases, local commuters travelling without a valid local pass have received e-notices and were required to pay penalty charges, including double the normal toll amount.

According to NHAI, the Digital FASTag Local Pass helps eligible local residents avoid such penalties by ensuring their monthly travel pass remains digitally linked to their FASTag.

How to apply for the monthly pass

Eligible users can apply through the official Rajmarg Yatra mobile app.

After installing the app, users need to select the FASTag Local Pass option and choose “Get Started”. They must answer the eligibility questions, search for their nearby toll plaza and complete digital verification through DigiLocker.

Once the verification is successful, applicants can pay the monthly fee of around ₹340 to ₹350 online. The local pass is then activated directly on the linked FASTag.

NHAI first introduced the digital local pass facility at the Mundka-Bakkarwala Toll Plaza on Delhi’s Urban Extension Road-II as a pilot project.

Following its successful rollout, the facility has now been expanded to more than 121 toll plazas across states including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Bihar, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh.

Users can check whether their nearest toll plaza supports the digital local pass by visiting the Rajmarg Yatra portal or using the Rajmarg Yatra mobile application.
