The Postal Department is introducing a new rule for Post Office Savings Bank (POSB) account holders.
From September 1, 2026, customers who have not linked a mobile number to their account will not be able to use banking services through the “DREAM” mobile app.
This means linking a mobile number will soon become necessary for smooth digital transactions.
The department is pushing these changes to make post office banking more secure and digital, especially in rural areas.
Aadhaar-Based Banking Gets a Major Upgrade
The postal department is expanding Aadhaar-based biometric banking through the DREAM app at branch post offices.
With this system, customers can use their fingerprints to access banking services, reducing paperwork and making transactions faster.
Under this new setup, customers will be able to:
Deposit up to ₹50,000 in savings accounts, RD accounts, and Sukanya Samriddhi accounts using Aadhaar verification
Withdraw up to ₹20,000 from savings accounts without filling a withdrawal slip
Old accounts will also be upgraded to Aadhaar-based e-KYC profiles for easier access to services.
However, these facilities are currently available only for single-holder accounts. Joint accounts and minor accounts are not yet included.
Big Convenience: Transactions From Any Post Office
One of the biggest changes is the new “BO Interoperability” system.
Earlier, customers could only carry out transactions at their home branch post office.
Now, after Aadhaar verification, they will be able to do banking from any branch post office across India.
This will be especially helpful for rural users and migrant workers who travel frequently.
e-KYC Rules and Why This Change Is Important
Under the new system, customer details will be automatically fetched from UIDAI Aadhaar records, including name, address, and date of birth.
Post office staff will not be able to manually edit this data. If there is any mismatch, customers will need to update their Aadhaar details first.
The Postal Department says these changes are aimed at improving security, speeding up transactions, and reducing fraud in postal banking.
To avoid service disruptions after September 1, 2026, customers are advised to link their mobile numbers to their POSB accounts as soon as possible.
