Why Could Apple Increase iPhone 17 Prices?
The possible price increase is being linked to the rising cost of DRAM and NAND flash storage.
These are important memory components used in smartphones and other electronic devices.
Apple has already increased prices of several other products in India, including MacBooks, Macs, iPads, Apple TV models and HomePod speakers.
Some of these products became up to ₹1 lakh more expensive.
Apple has attributed these price changes to a sharp increase in DRAM and NAND storage costs, with growing demand from AI infrastructure contributing to the higher prices.
The iPhone 17 series was largely left out of those earlier price increases in several markets.
However, the latest reports suggest that the iPhone could now also be affected.
iPhone 17 Already Became More Expensive in Japan
Japan has already seen an increase in iPhone 17 prices.
Reports indicate that the standard iPhone 17 became around 11.3% more expensive in Japan.
This has raised concerns that similar price changes could eventually reach other markets, including India.
So far, Indian buyers have avoided such an increase, but that could change if Apple decides to pass higher component costs on to consumers.
iPhone 17 Could Get ₹12,000 More Expensive
This is not the first report about a possible iPhone 17 price hike in India.
An earlier report suggested that Apple could increase the price of the standard iPhone 17 by around ₹12,000.
If that happens, the 256GB model could rise from its launch price of ₹82,900 to around ₹94,990.
Similar price increases were also reportedly expected for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, although specific revised prices for those models were not provided.
However, these figures are based on reports and should not be treated as confirmed prices unless Apple officially announces them.
Apple May Also Rethink Production Plans
The latest report has also claimed that Apple cancelled plans to increase production capacity on some manufacturing lines by 15% to 30%.
It is not clear which products or production lines are involved.
If accurate, the combination of higher memory costs and changes to production plans could suggest that Apple is reassessing both demand and the cost of manufacturing its current iPhone lineup.
Could Future iPhones Become Even More Expensive?
The rising cost of memory components could affect Apple’s future iPhones as well.
A Counterpoint Research estimate cited in the report suggests that the component cost of the 1TB iPhone 18 Pro Max could reach nearly $900.
For comparison, the estimated component cost of the equivalent iPhone 17 Pro Max is around $550.
The increase is reportedly being driven mainly by higher NAND storage and DRAM costs.
If component prices continue to rise, Apple could face greater pressure to increase the retail prices of future iPhone models.
For now, however, the reported iPhone 17 price hike in India has not been officially confirmed by Apple.
Buyers should wait for an official announcement before assuming that the current ₹82,900 starting price will change.
