If you’ve ever been asked to pay extra money after booking a cab through an app, you’re not alone.
The Maharashtra government has now stepped in after receiving a growing number of complaints from passengers about drivers demanding tips and additional payments beyond the fare shown on ride-hailing apps.
In response, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has ordered a detailed investigation and warned of strict action against both drivers and taxi aggregators found violating passenger rights.
Why Is the Government Taking Action?
The move comes after several commuters reported being pressured to pay extra money before or during their rides.
According to complaints, some drivers allegedly ask for tips before starting a trip, while others threaten to cancel the booking if passengers refuse to pay more than the amount displayed on the app.
The issue gained further attention after Kalyan MP Dr. Shrikant Shinde raised concerns with the state government.
Reports suggest that some passengers were left stranded after refusing to pay additional charges, especially during late-night travel and emergency situations.
Transport Department Asked to Investigate
Taking a serious view of the matter, Minister Sarnaik directed the State Transport Commissioner to investigate the functioning of app-based taxi services across Maharashtra.
He stated that forcing passengers to pay anything beyond the fare shown on the platform is unfair and unacceptable.
Authorities have been instructed to identify violations and take appropriate action against those responsible.
Passenger Rights Come Into Focus
The latest crackdown highlights growing concerns about customer experiences in the ride-hailing sector.
Over the years, consumer groups have raised issues related to ride cancellations, fare disputes, unofficial payments and a lack of accountability from some drivers and platforms.
Government officials have clarified that while passengers may choose to tip voluntarily, no driver or company can force customers to pay extra money as a condition for receiving service.
New Rules for Ride-Hailing Services May Be Coming
The Maharashtra government is also working on a new aggregator policy aimed at improving regulation of app-based taxi services.
The proposed policy is expected to focus on key issues such as fare transparency, passenger safety, service quality, complaint resolution and accountability of ride-hailing platforms.
With millions of people depending on app-based taxis in cities like Mumbai, Pune and Thane, the new rules could have a significant impact on both passengers and service providers.
What This Means for Commuters
The government’s action sends a clear message that passengers should not be forced to pay anything beyond the fare shown on the app.
If the investigation confirms the complaints, stricter rules and enforcement could help improve customer experiences and ensure fair treatment for commuters across Maharashtra.
For regular cab users, the crackdown may bring greater transparency and protection against unfair charges in the future.
