Canada PGWP changes could affect IELTS Requirements

Many students preparing to study in Canada focus on clearing the IELTS exam because it is one of the key requirements for admission to Canadian colleges and universities.

However, what many students don’t realize is that IELTS may also be required after graduation when applying for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).

This is especially important for thousands of Indian students who are expected to complete their studies in Canada this year and plan to stay back for work opportunities.

Why IELTS Is Important Even After Graduation

Most students take the IELTS exam before starting their studies in Canada.

Since IELTS scores are generally valid for two years, many students assume they won’t need the test again.

But under the updated rules, students may have to submit a valid language test score while applying for a PGWP.

If their previous IELTS result has expired by the time they graduate, they may need to take the exam again.

This is why students are being advised to check their IELTS validity and prepare in advance if required.

Who Is Eligible for a PGWP?

To apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit in Canada, students must meet certain conditions.

They must have completed their studies at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) that is eligible for PGWP.

The course completed should also qualify for a PGWP and must be at least eight months long.

Students are required to maintain full-time student status during their studies and must hold a valid study permit when submitting the PGWP application.

How Long Is the PGWP Valid?

The duration of a Post-Graduation Work Permit depends on the length of the student’s academic program.

In most cases, the permit can be issued for anywhere between eight months and three years.

One of the biggest advantages of a PGWP is that it allows graduates to work in almost any field across Canada.

However, students should note that the permit cannot be issued beyond the expiry date of their passport.

Because of this, it is advisable to ensure that the passport remains valid for the maximum possible duration before applying.

What Are the New Language Requirements?

Canada’s immigration department, IRCC, introduced new PGWP language requirements in November 2024.

Under these rules, applicants must submit language proficiency scores from an approved test such as IELTS when applying for a work permit.

For students graduating with university degrees such as Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD programs, a minimum CLB/NCLC 7 level is required in all four language skills—listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

This is roughly equivalent to an IELTS band score of 6.

For students completing college diplomas or other non-degree programs, a CLB/NCLC 5 level in all four skills is generally accepted.

What Should Students Do Now?

Students planning to work in Canada after graduation should not wait until the last moment to check their IELTS status.

If your existing score is likely to expire before you apply for a PGWP, it may be wise to schedule another IELTS test in advance.

Being prepared can help avoid delays in your work permit application and make the transition from student life to professional life in Canada much smoother.
