Indian Railways is preparing for one of its biggest digital upgrades in decades.
From August, the existing Passenger Reservation System (PRS), which has been in use since 1986, will be gradually replaced with a completely new platform.
The move is aimed at making train ticket booking faster, more reliable, and capable of handling the rapidly growing number of digital users across the country.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently reviewed the project and directed officials to ensure that passengers do not face disruptions during the transition.
End of an Era for the 1986 Reservation System
The current PRS has been the backbone of Indian Railways’ ticket booking system for nearly 40 years.
While it has received updates over time, its core structure remains largely unchanged since its launch in 1986.
With travel demand and digital usage increasing sharply, the old system is now struggling to keep up with modern requirements.
The new PRS has been built using advanced technology and is designed to handle a much higher volume of bookings with improved speed and stability.
Shift Towards Digital Booking Becomes Dominant
The way passengers book train tickets has changed dramatically over the past two decades.
Since the introduction of online booking in 2002, digital platforms have become the preferred choice for travelers.
Today, nearly 88% of all train tickets are booked online, reflecting the growing dependence on mobile apps and web platforms.
To support this shift, Indian Railways is upgrading its entire digital infrastructure.
RailOne App Becomes a Major Digital Hub
A key part of this transformation is the RailOne app, launched in July 2025.
In less than a year, the app has already crossed 3.5 crore downloads, becoming a central platform for railway services.
It allows users to:
Book and cancel tickets
Check train running status
View platform and coach details
File complaints
Access multiple railway services in one place
Railway data shows that around 9.29 lakh tickets are booked daily through the app, including both general and reserved tickets.
AI Tool Helps Predict Ticket Confirmation Chances
Another major innovation in the railway ecosystem is an AI-based waiting list prediction system.
This tool estimates the chances of a waitlisted ticket getting confirmed, helping passengers plan their journeys more effectively.
The system’s accuracy has improved significantly—from around 53% initially to nearly 94% now, making it a useful guide for travelers.
What the New PRS Will Change for Passengers
With the upcoming upgrade, Indian Railways aims to make ticket booking:
Faster during peak hours
More stable during high traffic
Less prone to failures and delays
Better equipped for rising digital demand
Officials believe the new system will provide a smoother and more dependable experience, especially during busy seasons like festivals and holidays.
Key Takeaway
Indian Railways will begin rolling out its new Passenger Reservation System from August, replacing the decades-old platform introduced in 1986.
Along with digital tools like the RailOne app and AI-based prediction systems, the upgrade is expected to make train ticket booking faster, smarter, and more efficient for millions of passengers across India.
