IndiGo cancels Manchester Services amid West Asia Crisis

IndiGo has announced that it will temporarily stop its flight operations between India and Manchester starting August 31.

The decision comes as the airline faces rising international operational challenges, including longer flight routes and increasing costs.

Along with the suspension, IndiGo will also return one of its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, which it had taken on a wet/damp lease from Norse Atlantic Airways.

The airline has clarified that this move is temporary and does not affect its broader international expansion plans.

Why IndiGo Is Pausing Manchester Flights

IndiGo explained that several global factors have made the India–Manchester route more difficult to operate efficiently.

Key challenges include:

Longer flight times due to restricted airspace routes

Rising aviation fuel (ATF) prices

Geopolitical tensions affecting Middle East air corridors

Foreign exchange fluctuations increasing operating costs

These combined issues have significantly increased the cost of operating long-haul international flights.

As a result, maintaining the route has become financially challenging under current conditions.

What Happens to Passengers Now?

IndiGo has assured that passengers booked on affected flights will not be left stranded.

The airline will:

Inform customers in advance

Offer alternate travel arrangements

Provide refunds where applicable

However, passengers may now need to rely on connecting flights instead of direct services between India and Manchester.

IndiGo also confirmed that all its other long-haul international routes will continue as scheduled.

The Original Plan Behind the Manchester Route

IndiGo had introduced this service in early 2025 as part of its strategy to expand into long-haul international markets.

For this purpose, the airline leased six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft from Norse Atlantic Airways.

The goal was to strengthen its presence in Europe before introducing its own Airbus A350 fleet in the future.

The Manchester route was seen as an important step in building IndiGo’s global footprint.

Industry Challenges Behind the Decision

The airline said the current global aviation environment has become increasingly difficult.

Major issues include:

Ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East

High jet fuel (ATF) costs

Airspace restrictions increasing travel time

Volatile foreign exchange rates

These factors have pushed operating expenses much higher than initially planned.

What IndiGo Said About the Move

Senior Vice President of Network Planning, Abhijit Dasgupta, said the decision was difficult but necessary due to uncontrollable external factors.

He added that IndiGo appreciates the support received from passengers, travel partners, and Manchester Airport, and emphasized that the airline still remains committed to long-haul international growth.

The suspension, he clarified, is temporary and part of a broader adjustment to current global conditions.

The Bottom Line

IndiGo’s decision highlights how global aviation is still under pressure from fuel costs, geopolitical tensions, and airspace restrictions.

While the Manchester route is being paused, the airline continues to maintain that its long-term international expansion plans remain unchanged.
