IMD Warns of Fog, Rain, and Cold across North India

Winter is at its peak in North India, and people are facing severe cold, dense fog, and high pollution levels. Daily life in Delhi-NCR is being badly affected.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a Western Disturbance is becoming active. Due to this, Delhi may see partly cloudy skies on the evening of December 31. On January 1, heavy rain is expected in many parts of Delhi-NCR.

Dense Fog Across Several States

The IMD has warned that dense to very dense fog will continue in many parts of North India over the next few days.

Fog is likely during night and morning hours in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and western Uttar Pradesh until December 31.

In eastern Uttar Pradesh, low visibility may continue until January 1, after which weather conditions are expected to improve gradually.

Dense fog is also likely in parts of eastern Madhya Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh until December 29. Fog-like conditions may persist in sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Odisha until January 1.

Orange Alert Issued in Delhi

The IMD has issued an orange alert for Delhi on December 29. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 22°C, while the minimum temperature may drop to about 7°C. Due to cold weather and fog, people have been advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions.

Cold Wave Warning in Northern States

Cold day-like conditions are very likely in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand on December 28 and 29. Similar conditions may occur in Bihar on December 28.

Cold wave conditions are also expected in some areas of Punjab, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh on December 28 and 29. Jharkhand may experience cold wave conditions on December 28 as well.

The IMD has also said that another Western Disturbance may become active in the western Himalayan region from December 30, and its impact may be felt in the nearby plains from December 31.

Very Low Visibility Reported

Weather data from the last 24 hours, recorded until 8:30 am on December 28, shows that very dense fog covered many areas of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. In several places, visibility dropped below 50 meters.

Dense fog was also reported in parts of the Jammu division, western Madhya Pradesh, and Assam. Low visibility conditions continued in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Delhi, Odisha, Bihar, and parts of Northeast India.

Rain and Snowfall Forecast

The IMD has predicted light to moderate rain and snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan,

and Muzaffarabad from December 30 to January 2. Some areas of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may also experience rain or snowfall during this period.

Light rain is expected in Punjab, Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Rajasthan between December 31 and January 1.

In addition, thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds are likely in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from December 28 to January 1, with heavy rainfall expected in some areas, especially on December 28.
