Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to launch the modified UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme in Jodhpur, Rajasthan on July 4, 2026.

Along with the launch, he will also inaugurate a new terminal building at Jodhpur airport.

The government says the upgraded UDAN scheme aims to strengthen regional air connectivity and improve aviation infrastructure across India over the next decade.

UDAN Scheme Gets Major Upgrade with ₹28,840 Crore Outlay

The modified UDAN scheme comes with a massive ₹28,840 crore budget for the next 10 years.

Its main goal is to make air travel more accessible in smaller cities and underserved regions.

A major focus of the scheme includes:

Development of 100 aerodromes from existing unserved airstrips

Investment of over ₹12,000 crore for airport expansion

Construction of 200 modern helipads in remote and difficult areas

These steps are designed to improve connectivity in areas where air travel options are currently limited.

Support for Airlines and Regional Operations

To ensure smooth operations, the government has also allocated funds to support regional aviation.

Over ₹2,500 crore will be used for Operations and Maintenance (O&M) of new airports

More than ₹10,000 crore will be provided as Viability Gap Funding (VGF) to airlines

This financial support is expected to help airlines operate in less profitable routes while gradually making them commercially sustainable.

The scheme also encourages the use of indigenous aircraft and helicopters, including HAL Dhruv and Dornier, to improve connectivity in remote regions.

New Jodhpur Airport Terminal Inaugurated

Alongside the UDAN launch, PM Modi will inaugurate the new terminal at Jodhpur Airport, built at a cost of ₹480 crore.

The terminal covers more than 23,000 square metres and can handle up to 20 lakh passengers annually.

It is equipped with modern facilities to improve passenger experience.

A Blend of Modern Design and Heritage

The new terminal has been designed to reflect the cultural heritage of Rajasthan.

Its architecture includes traditional elements like arches and jharokhas, combined with modern infrastructure.

According to the government, the building is also designed to achieve a 5-star GRIHA rating, highlighting its focus on energy efficiency and sustainability.
