Beware of Fake RTO Challan Messages on WhatsApp

If you’ve received a WhatsApp message asking you to pay an RTO challan, be very careful. It might look genuine, but it’s actually a scam.

Cybercriminals are sending fake messages with links or files that install malware on your phone when clicked.

Once the malware is installed, hackers can gain full control of your device.

How the Scam Works

According to a Times of India report, police have warned about a malicious file named “RTO Traffic Challan.apk” spreading quickly on WhatsApp.

If downloaded, it infects your phone and allows hackers to access personal details, bank accounts, passwords, and OTPs.

Cybersecurity agency Cyble Rail has identified this as a dangerous virus capable of remotely tracking every activity on your phone.

Several victims have already reported that their bank accounts were emptied after installing such files.

What Hackers Do

Scammers send the fake challan file from an unknown number, pretending it’s an official RTO message.

Believing it to be real, users download it — and that’s where the trouble begins.

Once installed, the app gives hackers access to your SMS, contacts, files, camera,

and microphone, allowing them to secretly monitor your activities and steal money from your account.

How to Stay Safe

Never click on unknown links or download APK files from WhatsApp or SMS.

Check challans only on official websites such as Parivahan.gov.in
