If you’re planning to study in New Zealand or have already received admission to a university there, this update is important for you.

The New Zealand government has advised Indian and other international students to apply for a student visa at least three months before their planned travel date.

Applying early can help students avoid delays that could affect the start of their studies.

Why Has New Zealand Issued This Advisory?

New Zealand has become a popular destination for Indian students because of its quality education, affordable tuition fees, and scholarship opportunities.

However, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has reported a sharp rise in student visa applications.

According to the agency, it has received around 20% more applications in 2026 compared to the same period last year.

INZ also said that some applications require additional background checks and verification, which can increase processing times.

Students who apply close to their course start date may not receive their visas before classes begin.

The agency has also reminded applicants that visa processing times are not guaranteed and are updated every week.

Documents Required for a New Zealand Student Visa

Students should keep the following documents ready before applying:

Valid passport

University admission offer letter

Tuition fee payment certificate

Financial documents

Educational certificates and mark sheets

English language test scores (IELTS or TOEFL)

Statement of Purpose (SOP)

Health certificate

Police Clearance Certificate (PCC)

Submitting all required documents together can help avoid unnecessary delays.

Submit a Complete Application

INZ has asked students to ensure that their visa applications are complete and that they respond quickly if additional information is requested.

Students who are still waiting for final academic results or other required documents can apply using a Conditional Offer of Place.

This allows the visa assessment process to begin.

However, an Unconditional Offer of Place must be submitted before the student visa can be approved.

What If Your Visa Is Delayed?

INZ has advised students who plan to start classes in July and applied for a visa in May or June to stay in touch with their educational institution.

If there is a possibility that the visa may not be approved before classes begin, students should discuss alternative options, such as deferring their admission to a later intake.

Applying early and submitting a complete application can significantly improve the chances of receiving a student visa on time.
