French Language Opens More Canada PR Opportunities for Indians

If you’re an Indian student or working professional living in Canada and planning to get Permanent Residency (PR), learning French could improve your chances.

Canada is encouraging more French-speaking immigrants to settle outside Quebec.

To support this goal, the country regularly holds special Express Entry draws for candidates who know French, often with lower score requirements than the regular PR draws.

Why Learning French Can Make PR Easier

Recently, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) invited 5,000 French-speaking candidates through a category-based Express Entry draw.

To qualify, applicants needed a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of at least 420 and an Express Entry profile created before May 15, 2026.

This is much lower than many regular Express Entry draws, where candidates often need more than 500 CRS points to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

For many Indian students and workers in Canada, this creates an easier path to PR.

Why Is the CRS Score Lower?

Most Indian applicants apply for PR through programs such as the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) or the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), where competition is very high.

French-language draws are different because they are reserved for candidates who can speak French.

Even applicants with average IELTS scores, a few years of Canadian work experience, and no job offer may have a good chance of receiving an ITA if they meet the French language requirements.

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible for a French-language Express Entry draw, you must:

Have an active Express Entry profile.

Be eligible under the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), or Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP).

Score NCLC/CLB 7 or higher in an approved French language test.

Take a recognized French exam such as TEF Canada or TCF Canada.

French language skills can also increase your CRS score by earning additional language points.

How to Get Canada PR Through French

If you want to use this pathway, here are the basic steps:

Check if you meet the eligibility requirements for Express Entry.

Assess your French language level and prepare for an approved French language test.

Create or update your Express Entry profile with your English and French language scores, education, and work experience.

Wait for a French-language Express Entry draw. If your CRS score meets the cutoff, you may receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

After receiving the ITA, submit your PR application within the required timeline and pay the applicable fees.

A Good Option for Indian Students and Workers

Many Indian graduates working in Canada on a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) or employer-sponsored work permit miss the regular Express Entry cutoff by 20 to 40 CRS points.

Instead of waiting for their CRS score to increase or depending entirely on a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), learning French can be a practical way to strengthen their profile and improve their chances of getting Canadian Permanent Residency.
