Background and Diplomatic Crisis
The restoration of these services comes in the aftermath of a temporary ban on visa services, which led to a diplomatic crisis between India and Canada.
This crisis had escalated to the point where 40 Canadian diplomats faced expulsion.
However, the Indian government has indicated that the emergency situation is not entirely resolved and remains under serious consideration.
Controversy Stemming from Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s Murder
The diplomatic dispute between India and Canada had its roots in the murder of Khalistani separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
The controversy was sparked when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made allegations of ‘possible’ involvement of Indian agents in Nijjar’s murder in June.
In retaliation, Canada expelled a senior Canadian diplomat, which led to the temporary ban on visa services.
The resumption of select visa services signifies a positive step towards mending bilateral relations.
This move is expected to foster improved diplomatic ties and facilitate travel and business interactions between India and Canada.
