India and New Zealand have signed a historic Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on April 27. The deal was finalized earlier in December 2025 and is now officially in place.
This agreement covers trade, investment, and movement of people. In simple terms, it opens new doors for Indian businesses, students, and workers.
If you are planning to study or work in New Zealand, this deal can make the process smoother and more rewarding.
Why New Zealand Matters for Indians
New Zealand is known for its strong economy, high-quality education system, and good job opportunities. It has some of the world’s top universities and a growing demand for skilled workers.
Sectors like dairy, IT, healthcare, and engineering are actively hiring. Around 300,000 people of Indian origin already live there, making up about 5% of the population. This makes it easier for new Indian students and workers to settle and adapt.
Big Benefits for Indian Workers
The FTA brings a major boost for Indian professionals. New Zealand will now offer “Temporary Employment Entry Visas” to Indians.
Around 5,000 visas will be issued every year
Each visa will be valid for 3 years
This means Indian professionals can now work in New Zealand more easily and for a longer period.
Special roles like AYUSH practitioners, yoga instructors, Indian chefs, and music teachers are also included. Along with them, professionals from IT, engineering, healthcare, education, and construction sectors will benefit.
Another big highlight is the “Working Holiday Visa.”
1,000 such visas will be issued every year
Valid for 12 months
This allows young Indians to travel and work in New Zealand at the same time, helping them gain international experience.
What Indian Students Will Gain
The FTA also focuses strongly on students. It makes studying in New Zealand more flexible and career-friendly.
Indian students will be allowed to:
Work up to 20 hours per week during studies
Continue this benefit even if rules change later
There are also big advantages after completing studies.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) graduates can stay and work for 3 years
PhD holders can work for up to 4 years
This gives students enough time to gain job experience and build a strong career in New Zealand.
A New Opportunity for the Future
Overall, this FTA makes it easier for Indians to study, work, and grow in New Zealand. It reduces barriers and creates clear pathways for career and education.
For students and professionals looking to go abroad, this agreement could be a game-changer.
