Thailand has once again made travel easier for Indian tourists. After confusion over its visa policy led to fewer bookings from India, the Thai government has restored 30-day visa-free entry for Indian passport holders.
The decision is expected to boost tourism from India, one of Thailand’s biggest travel markets.
Why Did Thailand Change the Rule?
Thailand’s Tourism Minister, Surasak Pancharoenvorakul, said the earlier proposal to change visa-free rules created confusion among Indian travelers. As a result, many people canceled or postponed their Thailand trips.
Since Indian tourists contribute significantly to Thailand’s tourism industry, the government quickly approved 30-day visa-free entry to encourage more visitors and restore confidence.
What Was the Earlier Plan?
Earlier, Indian citizens could stay in Thailand without a visa for up to 60 days.
However, in May, the Thai government proposed reducing the number of countries eligible for visa-free entry from 93 to 54. This raised fears that India might lose its visa-free status, leading to a drop in travel bookings.
After reviewing the situation, Thailand decided to keep India in its visa-free program.
What Is the New Rule for Indians?
Under the latest decision, Indian passport holders can now enter Thailand without a visa for up to 30 days.
According to the Tourism Minister, most Indian tourists stay for around a month or less, making the 30-day limit suitable for their travel plans. The government has also said the policy may be reviewed in the future if needed.
Which Other Countries Benefit?
Along with India, Thailand has also approved 30-day visa-free entry for travelers from Croatia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Malta, and the Maldives.
With this update, Thailand’s visa-free scheme now covers 60 countries and territories. The country is also working to improve travel ties with all 27 European Union (EU) member nations.
Why Are Indian Tourists Important?
India is one of Thailand’s biggest sources of international tourists. Chinese visitors rank first, Malaysians second, and Indians third.
Indian travelers are known for spending on shopping, sightseeing, hotels, and local attractions. Even a small decline in Indian visitors can affect Thai businesses, hotels, and tour operators.
Tourism Is a Major Part of Thailand’s Economy
Tourism plays a key role in Thailand’s economy. In 2025, the country welcomed around 33 million international tourists, generating nearly $50 billion (over ₹4 lakh crore) in revenue.
By the first week of July this year, Thailand had already received more than 16 million foreign visitors. The government continues to update its tourism policies to maintain this growth and attract more international travelers.
