If you use an SBI Card credit card, you need to be more careful from now on. From May 1, 2026, the bank has updated its late payment charge rules. Even small unpaid amounts will now lead to penalties, which were not applicable earlier.
New Late Payment Charges Explained
Under the updated system, missing even a small payment can cost you extra money.
If your outstanding balance is ₹0 to ₹100, there is no charge
For ₹100 to ₹500, a ₹100 penalty will now apply (earlier it was free)
For ₹500 to ₹1,000, the fee has increased to ₹500 (earlier ₹400)
For ₹1,000 to ₹10,000, the charge remains ₹750
For ₹10,000 to ₹25,000, it is ₹950
For ₹25,000 to ₹50,000, it is ₹1,100
- For above ₹50,000, the charge is ₹1,300
The major change is that even small dues between ₹100 and ₹500 will now attract a penalty, which was not the case earlier.
Extra Penalties and Credit Score Risk
If you fail to pay the Minimum Amount Due (MAD) for two consecutive billing cycles, you will be charged an additional ₹100 penalty every month until the dues are cleared.
SBI Card may also send reminders through calls, SMS, emails, or other communication methods. In some cases, recovery agencies can also be involved.
If payments continue to be missed, your account details may be reported to credit bureaus. This can negatively affect your credit score and make it harder to get loans or credit in the future.
