The UK Home Office has announced a strict new rule on student visas.

From now on, study visa applications from Sudan, Afghanistan, Cameroon, and Myanmar will be refused.

The government says this step is part of a crackdown on misuse of the visa system.

Why the UK Took This Decision

According to officials, there has been a sharp rise in asylum claims from students coming from these countries.

Between 2021 and 2025, applications increased by more than 470%.

Around 95% of Afghan students later applied for asylum

Applications from Myanmar increased 16 times

Claims from Cameroon and Sudan rose by over 330%

The government believes this trend is putting heavy pressure on the UK’s asylum system.

Government’s Stand on the Issue

UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the country will continue to support people who are genuinely in danger.

However, she made it clear that the visa system should not be misused.

The government described this move as a necessary step to protect the integrity of its immigration system.

Efforts to Reduce Asylum Pressure

The UK has already started taking steps to control rising asylum claims.

Student asylum claims dropped by 20% in 2025

Still, students account for about 13% of total asylum claims

Since coming to power in July 2024, the government has also reduced its asylum support budget by £1 billion.

Migration Becoming a Big Political Issue

Immigration has become a major political topic in the UK.

The rise of Reform UK, known for its strong anti-immigration stance, has increased pressure on the government.

Under Prime Minister Keir Starmer, stricter rules and faster deportation processes are being introduced.

Visa Rules Used as a Pressure Tool

The UK is also using visa policies to push countries to take back their citizens staying illegally.

Earlier, warnings were issued to countries like Angola, Namibia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Now, the government says agreements have been reached, and deportation flights have already started.

What This Means

This decision marks a major shift in the UK’s visa policy.

While genuine refugees will still receive help, the government is clearly focusing on stopping misuse of student visas.

For students from the affected countries, studying in the UK has now become much more difficult.
