Flights at Jaisalmer Airport will soon stop as the airport prepares to shut down temporarily for the summer season.
According to reports, the last flight will depart on March 28, and from March 29 onwards, there will be no flight operations from the airport.
The airport currently handles around six flights daily, connecting the tourist city with major destinations such as Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.
However, none of these routes appear in the upcoming summer flight schedule.
This means the airport will remain without regular commercial flights for several months.
Why Flights Stop During Summer
The temporary shutdown is not new for the city. Flight services to Jaisalmer usually operate mainly during the winter tourist season.
Between March and September, airlines often cancel services because passenger demand drops significantly.
As the extreme desert heat keeps many tourists away, airlines find it difficult to fill flights.
As a result, airlines suspend operations during this period and resume flights once the winter tourist season begins again.
Impact on Tourism and Local Travel
The suspension of flights can create difficulties for both tourists and local residents.
Jaisalmer is one of Rajasthan’s most popular tourist destinations, known for its desert landscapes, forts, and cultural heritage.
With flights stopping for months, visitors will have to rely on road or rail transport to reach the city.
Local businesses connected to tourism, including hotels and tour operators, may also feel the impact during the off-season.
Locals Demand Year-Round Air Connectivity
Many residents believe that Jaisalmer should have year-round air connectivity, even if the number of flights is limited.
They suggest that the government and airlines could work together to operate connecting flights instead of stopping services completely.
Such a move could support tourism throughout the year and also make travel easier for residents.
For now, once the final flight departs on March 28, the airport will remain largely empty, and travelers will have to depend on other modes of transport until flight services resume later in the year.
