Aadhaar, PAN, and Ration Card Won’t Prove You’re Indian – Only These 2 IDs Will

How to Prove You Are an Indian Citizen: Aadhaar card, PAN card, and ration card will no longer be accepted as proof of Indian citizenship.

This move comes as Delhi Police tightens its crackdown on illegal immigrants, especially from the Bangladeshi and Rohingya communities, who often use fake documents to claim Indian identity.

Stricter Rules and Increased Monitoring

Under a new citizenship verification policy introduced in late April, Delhi Police has increased surveillance and identification of suspicious migrants across all districts.

Each district’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) is now responsible for identifying and taking action against such individuals.

Police say that many illegal immigrants manage to get Aadhaar, PAN, and ration cards through fraudulent means.

These documents were often used to falsely prove Indian citizenship. Now, they will no longer be considered valid proof.

Only These Two Documents Will Be Accepted

As per the new guidelines, only the following two documents will be accepted as valid proof of Indian citizenship:

  1. Voter ID Card

  2. Indian Passport

If a person does not possess either of these, they will have to approach the court to apply for citizenship.

Refugee Status Is Not Enough

Some people carry refugee cards issued by the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees).

However, Delhi Police clarifies that these cards do not grant legal right to stay in India unless recognized by the Indian government. People in such cases may face deportation.

Action Taken for National Security

This strict move comes after a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, in which 28 tourists lost their lives.

In response, the Union Home Ministry has canceled most visas for Pakistani citizens, except for medical, diplomatic, or long-term visas.

As of April 29, even medical visas were declared invalid.

Out of around 3,500 Pakistani nationals in Delhi, more than 400 out of 520 Muslim Pakistani citizens have already returned to Pakistan.
