A strict new law has been introduced in India to take action against those using fake passports and visas.
President Draupadi Murmu has approved the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025.
According to this law, anyone who enters, stays in, or leaves India using a fake passport or visa can face up to seven years in jail and a fine ranging from ₹1 lakh to ₹10 lakh.
This law is an important step towards tightening control over immigration and the movement of foreigners in the country.
Now, the activities of foreign nationals will be monitored more closely. Hotels, universities, hospitals,
and educational institutions are required to report all necessary details about foreign nationals to the government. This will help in tracking and managing their stay in India.
Old Laws to Be Replaced
With the introduction of this new law, four existing laws will be repealed:
The Passport (Entry into India) Act, 1920
The Registration of Foreigners Act, 1939
The Foreigners Act, 1946
The Immigration (Carriers Liability) Act, 2000
These outdated laws will now be replaced by the new and more comprehensive Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025.
Monitoring of Foreign Nationals
As per the new law, the activities of foreigners in India will be closely monitored. Places like hotels, universities, hospitals,
and educational institutions must now give complete details of foreign nationals to the government. This will help track and manage how long they stay in the country.
